Integrated valuation of a nature-based solution for water pollution control. Highlighting hidden benefits

This study assesses the benefits of a multi-purpose nature-based solution for water pollution control in a peri-urban area located in Gorla Maggiore (northern Italy), using an ecosystem service approach and applying an integrated valuation based on MCA for local water management. This solution is compared with the alternative “doing nothing” and with the construction of conventional grey infrastructure. This case study gives an example of integrating different value systems and stakeholders' viewpoints, thus providing hands-on guidance for integrated valuation in ecosystem service...

Raulhac orchads - Harnessing agroforestal techniques for sustainable ecosystem management in Auvergne

Raulhac orchads, 2022 (c) Genesis
  • For adapting to climate change : creating microclimates and boosting the resistance of crops to increasingly frequent droughts in the Corrèze, and introducing nitrogen-fixing tree species.
  • For biodiversity : creating ecological continuities between natural areas of ecological, faunistic and floristic interest (ZNIEFF) and improving the general condition of the soil.
  • For the local area : integrating these developments into local supply chains (fruit production, heating, firewood, use in livestock farming, etc.)

Farm "des Clos" - Harnessing agroecological practices to increase adaptation to higher temperatures in Yvelines

Ferme des Clos (c) Saaltus
  • For adapting to climate change : plant trees and shrubs suited to the pedoclimatic context (chemical pollution, shelter from wind and storms, combatting drought, etc.) and combat soil erosion.
  • For biodiversity : create ecological continuity between the Regional Natural Park and cereal fields, recreate the humus and surface soil layers.
  • For the local area : contribute to the economic revenue of the local authority and use the wood in the firewood sector

Rehabilitation of the Capbreton dune system

• Adaptation to climate change : Resistance to coastal recession through the restoration and sustainable management of dunes
For biodiversity : Restoring the biodiversity of dune flora and fauna

Cap-Phoenix project : post-fire restoration of the forest massif

• For adaptation to climate changes : understand and promote the resilience of natural habitats to
fire risk, in the context of climate change and share knowledge and involve people in fire risk awareness.
• For biodiversity : Support the regeneration of degraded natural areas

MED-FORESTE project, prevention of wildfire risks

Donkey sylvopastoralisme

- For adaptation to climate changes : Evaluate the feasibility, impact and benefits of setting up
sylvopasture systems with grazing donkeys to replace or complement mechanical scrub clearance
operations on combustible biomass.
- For biodiversity : Reduce pressure on the environment with an input of organic matter to the soil

H2020 PONDERFUL: a technical handbook on pond and pondscape restoration, management and creation

Despite their critical importance for biodiversity and significant potential as nature-based solutions for climate change mitigation and adaptation, ponds and pondscapes have traditionally been undervalued and overlooked.

The Horizon2020 PONDERFUL project brought together an international consortium to investigate the potential of these small habitats as nature-based solutions. This new knowledge, along with existing expertise from the PONDERFUL partners, has been brought together into a new technical handbook.

H2020 PONDERFUL: new policy maker guidance on ponds and pondscapes as nature-based solutions

Despite their critical importance for biodiversity and potential as nature-based solutions for climate change adaptation and mitigation, ponds and pondscapes are not well represented in policy. Most freshwater legislation is biased towards rivers, with ponds largely being ignored.

The Horizon 2020 PONDERFUL project has revealed more about the importance of ponds for wildlife and people and, to make this accessible to policy makers, the partnership produced a policy guidance document: sing ponds and pondscapes as nature-based solutions: Guidance for policy makers on the...
