The Grünzug Pleisenbach project in Chemnitz, Germany, emerged in response to several challenges, primarily the hindrance posed by the old coal train station and its remaining tracks, acting as a barrier between neighborhoods. Additionally, the area faced a shortage of green spaces, and environmental issues like contaminated sites and artificial creek embedment hindered biodiversity and climate resilience. The city, with a population of 250,945 and spanning 221.03 km2, recognized the need for transformative urban planning.
The project entails the revitalization of the old coal train station, transforming it into a neighborhood park, housing, and a bicycle track. A crucial element is the creation of a bicycle track along the old train tracks, fostering connectivity between urban and suburban areas. This aligns with Nature-Based Solutions (NbS), as seen in the revitalization of the creek and the establishment of Pleisenpark.
Initiated in 2016, the project progressed through conceptualization (2017), planning, and approval phases (2018–2023), with construction expected to continue until 2027. The project adheres to legal processes, with regular specialist planning and project group meetings involving all relevant departments. Leadership is provided by the Green Space Department (technical) and City Planning Office (administrative), with collaboration from various planning and engineering offices.
Financially, the action is supported by different national and federal funding programs, amounting to a total of €17 million. Achievements include the creation of a recreational area, a low-barrier and inclusive natural space, and a supra-regional cycling network. Nature-centric accomplishments involve watercourse renaturalization, flood protection, development of species-rich natural areas, and the establishment of a cold air corridor, contributing to climate protection and adaptation.
Looking forward, construction is anticipated to extend beyond 2027, with potential replication of watercourse renaturalization strategies for the Gablenzbach. The Grünzug Pleisenbach project stands as a comprehensive approach to urban revitalization, incorporating green infrastructure for ecological sustainability and community well-being.
