The European Union is increasingly focusing on advancing nature-based solutions (NbS) to solve the wicked problems we face, from biodiversty loss to global warming. A new study by Clive Davies, Wendy Y. Chen, Giovanni Sanesi and Raffaela Lafortezza trace the roadmap of EU's plans to promote and implement NbS.

The EU defines nature-based solutions as “solutions that are inspired and supported by nature, which are cost-effective, simultaneously provide environmental, social and economic benefits and help build resilience. Such solutions bring more, and more diverse, nature and natural features and processes into cities, landscapes and seascapes, through locally adapted, resource-efficient and systemic interventions.” Further the European Commission outlines they must benefit biodiversity and support the delivery of a range of ecosystem services. The EU sees NbS crucial to establishing a socially inclusive, economically vibrant and ecologically resilient society. This is why the EU is supporting research and innovation in the field, through funding mechanisms such as Horizon 2020, which has resulted in extensive implementation of NbS in Europe and globally, and robust scientific research.

The EU is aiming to position itself as a world leader in NbS research, and thus supports projects such as NetworkNature gather and synergize the efforts of the European NbS community. Explore the NbS case-studies to learn more about findings and insights from pioneering EU-projects and see the EU infographics on NbS projects and benefits.
