The repurposing of streets into green transit areas is an agreement-based instrument to increase the amount of urban green spaces in Amsterdam (Netherlands) and to prevent overcrowding due to private vehicles. In its application, the instrument disincentivizes the use of cars and thus reduces air pollution and environmental noise. Through increasing the amount of green spaces, public space can be revitalized and enjoyed by citizens. The instrument thus increases spaces for greening, which at the same time provide environmental and socio-economic benefits such as social cohesion and the stimulation of green jobs increases. This entry focuses on the Hondsrugpark in particular, a large city park designed in collaboration by the Muncipality of Amsterdam and Wonam, a private housing construction organization.
