The "Vienna Urban Heat Island Strategy" (2011-2014) is an initiative of the City of Vienna in Austria, covering the city as well as peri-urban areas. The Strategy aimed to identify appropriate measures and adaptations to reduce the negative aspects of urban warming. For this purpose, the Strategy included options for action such as open space planning and urban ecology measures, and was supported by an awareness-raising campaign to promote the acceptance of the measures. The policy instrument includes nature-based solution measures, including forest restoration in peri-urban areas, which are implemented by local, experienced state institutions and have been running for many years.
