The Urban Arborization Guide for the Metropolitan Area of Asunción (AMA) is an instrument of knowledge and innovation that aims to be a tool for achieving improved arborization in the city, thus helping to enhance the services provided by urban trees. The instrument was developed by the Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development (MADES) with support from the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and the Global Environment Facility (GEF). The tool generates strategies aimed at generating knowledge on the different stages of the tree planting process and presents recommendations on best practices, current regulations, a general description of the ecoregions and the natural characteristics of the Metropolitan Area of Asunción. It also includes thirty technical data sheets on native species recommended for tree planting that include particularities of each species in terms of their uses, ideal location in urban areas and the maintenance and care required.

The knowledge tool contained in the Urban Arborization Guide is part of the 29 manuals developed through the Asunción Green City of the Americas - Pathways to Sustainability project. This instrument was led by the Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development (MADES) and the Ministry of Urbanism, Housing and Habitat (MUVH) with the objective of creating databases to inform urban development in Asunción. The Municipality of Asunción, the National Government of Paraguay, the Technical Secretariat of Economic Development, the Ministry of Public Works and Communications and the National Emergency Secretariat were also involved in the design of the project of which the Arborization Guide is a part.

Details about instrument financing:

During this research, no specific budget was found for the implementation of the Guide, but it is part of a sustainable urban development project with a budget of over €4,000,000. Funding for this project comes mainly from the Global Environment Facility (GEF).

The United Nations Development Program publishes newsletters with follow-up information about the Asunción Green City of the Americas project every 3 months.

Achieved outcomes and impacts:

The Urban Arborization Guide was used as a base material for the training of municipal nurseries planned for the second half of 2019. Also, the Vice Ministry of Transportation of the Ministry of Public Works and Communications (MOPC) organized the installation of 30 shelters for public transportation passengers, with sustainability criteria. The shelters will be named after AMA tree species, including a QR code that links to the MADES "Urban Arborization Guide". The MOPC completed the implementation of the pilot phase of the invasive species management plan for the Metropolitan Guasu Park. In this phase, one hectare invaded by Leucaena, an invasive exotic tree, was intervened by applying different removal methods. Similarly, one hectare of area invaded by star grass, an exotic grass used for pasture, was cleared. After clearing these areas, a variety of 22 native tree species native to the area were planted to reinforce the ecological recovery of the degraded areas. The intervention was supported by the Arborization Guide.
