Payments for Environmental Services (PES) are an environmental compensation that allows various actors to offset their carbon footprint through payments to peasant families owning land of ecosystemic interest or rural communities such as indigenous or Afro communities, who inhabit a strategic area for the generation of activities that sequester carbon dioxide from the environment or have other ecosystemic benefits or environmental services. In the framework of the municipality of Envigado, the municipality is active in the management of PES but these are distributed through the BanC02 program, which is led by the Colombian NGO Más Bosques. This means that the implementation of projects using PES is based on a process of co-creation between the public sector and civil society organizations.
