Curitiba Climate Change Plan

Curitiba's Municipal Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation Plan is a legislative and sectoral instrument that aims to guide the municipality, the productive sector and society to address the effects of climate change, as well as mitigate the impacts of rising temperatures and improve the city's adaptive capacity. This plan is linked to the SDGs and the Paris Agreement and emphasizes actions to achieve greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions neutrality by 2050 and increase the city's resilience.

Curitiba's climate change plan aims to include the community, seek social, economic and environmental benefits, and ensure that these benefits are equitable. This plan also aims to change the city's growth typology from radial to a linear model of urban expansion, adopting as a strategy the integration of aspects of land use, road systems, public transportation, and economic, social, and environmental development in the definition of local policies that include ecosystem-based adaptation and the use of nature as a tool for climate change adaptation.

A work plan called Clima GT was created for the elaboration of this plan, coordinated jointly by the Municipal Secretariat of the Environment and the Curitiba Institute of Research and Urbanism. It also brings together representatives of the Municipal Secretariats of Environment; Planning, Finance and Budget; Public Works; Social Defense and Traffic; and Food and Nutritional Security; as well as the Curitiba Institute of Urban Planning and Research; Urbanização de Curitiba S.A.; the Curitiba Development Agency S.A.; the State Attorney General's Office; the Office of International Relations; COPEL; and SANEPAR.

This plan has implementation dates for 2030 and in order to carry out this plan, estimated costs must be taken into account, possible sources of financing must be analyzed and mentioned, as well as the allocation of resources from the municipal budget.
